Community Police Consultative Group for Lambeth to hear questions on death of service user Sean Rigg PDF Print E-mail
Community Arlert!...........Community Alert..........Community Alert....        Tuesday 6 January 2008

The tragic death of service user Sean Rigg will be among the issues discussed at today's Community Police Consultative Group (CPCG) for Lambeth.

Open to the public, this evening's meeting, in the Assembly room at the Town Hall, offers the growing numbers of individuals and community groups who are concerned about this case, the chance to ask questions about the circumstances surrounding this unexpected fatality, which the IPPC reported occurred 91 minutes after Rigg was taken into custody at Brixton police station in August last year.

This evenings meeting will also include a briefing from the IPCC commissioner Deborah Glass as well as a monthly update on policing and community issues from superintendent Christine Jones.

This monthly event is now one of the most high profile aspects of the CPCG's work, and provides one of the few forums where the community can come and speak to those in authority about how decisions are made, as well as accountability and practice

Many people in the borough of Lambeth have only recently come to learn about the tragic death of Rigg, who the IPCC reported, died after he was taken into police custody. The Independent on Sunday reported that the events leading up his death have still not been made available to Rigg's family.  However an independent pathology report points to a restraint-related death, but the family are still waiting for an official coroner's report.

A well loved and long term resident of Lambeth, Rigg, who was also a professional musician and songwriter, was well known to the police and by all accounts was if good psychical health before the family were given the news of his untimely death last year.

Staring at 6pm this evening at Lambeth Town Hall, the CPCG provides a forum for consultation between the police and community in Lambeth.

Established in the late 1980's these monthly meetings provides a forum where members of the community and those paid to keep them safe  can  share information, raise concerns and develop common understanding around issues of community relations, safety , and law and order the borough

The Meeting, which is open to the public starts at 6.00 pm at in the Assembly room Lambeth Town Hall in the Assembly Hall, Brixton, SW2 IRW, on Tuesday, 6 January 2009.  Refreshments will be provided at this meeting
