Seminar on the National DNA Database and Britain's black communities Print
Hosted by Administrator

Event on ethnic minorities and the DNA database  in London on Friday 17th July
Organised by Black Mental Health UK and GeneWatch UK, this event is hosted by the Policy Engagement Network, the Information and Innovation Group at the London School of Economics.
This is the only national event organised this year on the issue on engaging with government through the Home Office consultation on the DNA database: 'Keeping the right people on the DNA database' and the over representation of citizens from African Caribbean communities who have their details on this system.

Public education drive on Home Office DNA consultation
This seminar is part of a public education strategy to raise awareness among minority communities about the disproportionate impact that current Home Office policy on the collection and retention of innocent DNA is having on Briton's black communities. This event will equip delegates  who attend with the essential information needed to be able take part in the Government ‘s public consultation on the database which runs until the 7th August 2009.

- An estimated 57% black men on DNA database are innocent
- 77 % of young black men currently have their DNA on the database
- Three out four black men have their DNA on the database
- People from African Caribbean communities have lower lifetime offending rates than their white counterparts.

Key issues on the DNA database and Brition's minority communities
Delegates attending will learn about:

  • The current status of DNA policy in Britain
  • How the DNA database affects Black Britons
  • Engaging with the government through the Home Office consultation: ‘Keeping the right people on the DNA database'
