Our campaigns aims to address the over representation of African Caribbean people detained in psychiatric settings. People from these communities currently make up over a third of patients in medium secure psychiatric hospitals despite being less than three percent of the national population. Black people are subject to higher rates of sectioning, over-medication, misdiagnosis and forcible restraint despite similar rates of mental ill health as other ethnic groups.
We have seen the deaths of too many black patients while detained in psychiatric care. We believe that the Government should not ignore this and that discrimination within mental health services needs to be addressed.
